Sulakshan appointed as Mumbai Ranji coach
Mumbai: In picking former stumper Sulakshan Kulkarni as the team's new coach, 39-time Ranji Trophy champion Mumbai not only aim to regain the coveted title after a year's gap but also build up its bench strength, said Chandrakant Pandit, chairman of the selection panel.
"Sulakshan knows the culture of Mumbai cricket and its players very well, having played a lot for the team. We not only want him to help Mumbai regain the Ranji Trophy, but also want him to develop our bench strength," former India stumper Pandit, who heads the Cricket Improvement Committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association, said on Tuesday.
"He's an experienced coach (having been the mentor of Vidarbha). He's street-smart and all the members of the committee were happy with his selection as the coach of the team," Pandit said.
The 44-year-old Kulkarni, who retired from first class cricket more than a decade ago after having represented Mumbai, Railways, Assam and Vidarbha in the national championship, was chosen as the new Mumbai coach on Monday and would take over the reins of the oft-crowned champions from Pravin Amre.
The CIC also appointed Milind Rege, former Mumbai skipper, as the chairman of its senior selection panel which would have Abey Kuruvilla, Pradip Kasliwal and Abdul Ismail as its other members.
