India concede highest total against England

India concede highest total against England
New Delhi: Treating the Indian bowlers with utter disdain, England on Friday registered 710/7 declared in their first innings of the Edgbaston Test - their highest total against India, which was also the third highest ever conceded by India in Test cricket.
Surpassing their previous highest of 653/4 declared at Lord's in 1990, England rode on Alastair Cook's 294 to reach the milestone. It was also the triple century by Graham Gooch (333) in 1990 that helped England to their previous highest.

Gooch, the present batting coach with the England side, then helped his team register a comfortable 247-run win against their opponents, and this time it's Cook, also from Essex just like Gooch, who set the perfect platform for the home side to take a 3-0 lead in the four-match series and with that dethrone India from their number one position in Test cricket.
It was also against India in Birmingham when the Englishmen put up their now fourth highest total when they declared their first innings at 633-5 declared in the 1979. David Gower scored an unbeaten double ton in that game and no wonder India lost the contest by an innings.
Here are the ten highest scores India conceded against England so far in their 79-year old cricket rivalry:
- 653-4dec at Lord’s in 1990, Result: Lost
- 652-7d at Chennai in 1984-85, Result: Lost
- 633-5d at Birmingham in 1979, Result: Lost
- 629 at Lord's in 1974, Result: Lost
- 617 at Nottingham in 2002, Result: Drawn
- 594 at The Oval in 1982, Result: Drawn
- 571-8d at Manchester in 1936, Result: Drawn
- 564 at Nottingham in 1996, Result: Drawn
- 559-8d at Kanpur in 1963-64, Result: Drawn
- 550-4d at Leeds in 1967, Result: Lost
The highest total ever conceded by India was 952-6 declared against Sri Lanka in Colombo in the 1997 series. And the second highest was also against the Island nation (760/7 declared) in Ahmedabad in 2009/10. Both the matches ended in draws.
